Newquay, 3 April 2014
Apple Aviation Group (AAG), a successful, UK based aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) company has laid the foundations of its new hangar at Aerohub at Newquay Cornwall Airport, the location of its base maintenance facility headquarters.
The new facilities within Aerohub, the airport’s Enterprise Zone, will provide a large, bespoke space for AA’s increased operations. This will include a MRO hangar facility, bespoke teardown / parts processing facility, aircraft parking area and management offices totalling 150,000 sq. ft which is part funded by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund.
Kris Hopkins, Local Growth Minister, commented: “It is great news that Apple Aviation is moving to the Newquay Enterprise Zone. As part of our long term economic plan, the Enterprise Zone has quickly turned Aerohub into a jobs hotspot for the aerospace industry attracting private sector investment, skills training and more jobs opportunities for people in Cornwall.”
Commercial Director of Apple Aviation, Bernard Longman, said: “Aerohub at Newquay Cornwall Airport has been selected as the site for our new MRO facility, due to the excellent infrastructure the airport has to offer plus the benefits of developing our new business venture within the Enterprise Zone. The MRO facility will include aircraft storage and recycling areas and AAG looks forward to building relationships with the local community and businesses, in addition to contributing to the economy in the South West.”
Chair of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (CIoS LEP), Chris Pomfret added: “This is a further milestone for Aerohub and builds on the 148 jobs we have already attracted since the Enterprise Zone went live in April 2012. With the zone’s tax incentives recently extended by a further three years to 2018 and a streamlined planning regime in place, we are confident of attracting further investment and jobs.”
Al Titterington, Managing Director at Newquay Cornwall Airport commented: “I am pleased to be welcoming Apple Aviation, a fixed wing MRO business to the Aerohub at Newquay Cornwall Airport. Their presence is a positive addition to the current Aerohub portfolio and we believe their services will assist in attracting other aviation businesses to the airport’s Enterprise Zone. Apple Aviation will bring exciting employment opportunities for skilled workers and will also provide extra revenue to businesses within the local economy."
Julian German, Cornwall Council Portfolio Holder for Economy & Culture commented: “This is further proof that Newquay Aerohub in particular, and Cornwall in general, are great places to do business."
AAG’s arrival in Newquay is having a positive impact on the local community. The business has already recruited five new employees, three of which are from Cornwall. AA hopes to double the number of new recruits by the end of the year, and if it should win a large contract, aims to have as many as 22 employees by the end of 2014.
AAG currently has an Embraer aircraft at Aerohub at Newquay Airport under a long term contract for maintenance and storage. Soon they will see the arrival of both Airbus and Boeing aircrafts and hope to perform their first teardown at the airport in April, which will be a wide body aircraft.
Approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for EASA Part 145 Base/line maintenance and EASA Part M Continued Airworthiness Management and holding a bespoke permit from the UK Environment Agency for aircraft recycling, AAG currently operates at Manchester, East Midlands, Chester, London Heathrow, Norway, Istanbul, Jeddah, Paris and Brussels as well as other locations worldwide.
As England’s only aerospace focussed Enterprise Zone, Aerohub at Newquay Cornwall Airport already has a number of high profile clients within the 280-acre site and has ample development opportunities which include hangars and office buildings, as well as a business park. AA has provided Aerohub at Newquay Cornwall Airport with a highly reputable MRO capability along with the capacity to grow the site.
